Yarra Junior Football League
The Brunswick Junior Football Club plays in the Yarra Junior Football League (YJFL) competition. The YJFL was formed in 1997 through the amalgamation of the Doncaster & Districts Junior Football League and the Hawthorn Districts Junior Football League and is now one of the largest junior football leagues in Melbourne.
The YJFL fixture games on Sundays (with some Youth Girls matches played on Saturdays).
Tackers (U8s and U9s) games usually commence at 8.45 or 10.00am. Tackers and U10s play on a reduced field with modified rules, with the emphasis on participation. See the JUNIOR MATCH DAY GUIDELINES for a summary of the modified rules introduced for U8s, 9s and 10s in 2015. There is no scoring in U8s and U9s matches. Scores are displayed during Under 10s matches. These scores are recorded but not published and there are no finals or ladders in the U10s competition. For more details regarding U8–10 games, refer to the YJFL Statement of Rules and League By-Laws.
U14 mixed, U15 girls, U15 boys, Colts and Youth Girls are generally played at 1pm and 3pm to fit in 20-minute quarters.
Length of quarters:
Under 10–Under 13: 15 minutes
Under 14–Colts: 20 minutes
Under 12 Girls: 15 minutes
Under 15 Girls–Youth Girls: 20 minutes
One of the main advantages of the YJFL is that it grades all sides after the completion of 4 rounds to keep the competition as even as possible. Under 10s to Under 14s are graded into colours (Red, Black, Blue, Green, Brown and Gold Divisions, with Gold being the highest division) and Under 15s and up are graded by number.
The 2018 season commences on 2nd April. No games are played on the Queen’s Birthday long weekend or in the middle of school holidays.
The YJFL offers all age groups in consecutive years from Tackers (U8s and U9s) up to Colts (combined U16/17) and Youth Girls (12 to 17 years). In 2016 the BJFC are fielding an U15 and a Youth Girls team, Tackers (U8 and U9), U10, U11, U12, U13 and U14 (mixed gender) teams, an U15 boys team and a Colts (U17 boys) team.
